Morning,
Just found this tribe while trying to find a decent place to buy fire wands.
The name grabbed my attention and so here I am.
I've been burning for a couple months now. Though only in the last few weeks since I made my contact staff has it been regularly. (Once a week.)
My first time was going to be with poi, but I was not doing so well unlit, then someone handed me a staff, I pulled a few moves from back when I was in high-school drill team and three people said at once, "Step away from the poi, you're burning that."
So I did, was great, even though all I could manage to do was spin the staff once it was lit.
Since then I have made my own and am working on contact staff, fire eating and last week I started breathing.
The breathing is what brought me into the scene in the first place, I had practiced the form with water, but refused to even touch fuel until I knew someone that did fire breathing that was willing to supervise and advise, I am quite glad that my patience has finally paid off.

I'm located in Portland, OR, so if anyone knows of burns other than the Sunday burns under the bridge, let me know. Maybe I'll get lucky and it'll be on a day off.

I saw poi for the first time in March while traveling thus Central America. Some kids in Granada, Nicaragua were spinning fire and I hooked up with them. They made me some practice poi out of socks, shoelaces and rice, and ever since I have been swinging unlit poi (glow poi, sock poi) around. A week ago my first set of fire poi arrived in the mail.

Saturday night it finally happened - my first burn. We - that would be me, and friends Scott, Rick, June and Thomas - gathered at Cane Bay after sunset. I brought all the gear: Fuel (lamp oil), Water, wet towels, spin out cans, dunk can, first aid kit, fire extinguisher and of course the fire poi and a big bag of assorted other poi. And music.

As this is all completely new for all of us, and we did not have an experienced fire spinner amongst us, we stared off by watching the HOP fire safety video on my laptop up on the dive deck. We looked thru all the gear and we discussed safety procedures. Thomas is an ex firefighter and EMT, so I could not have asked for a better safety. Rick was appointed the official "fuel dude" and June is the videographer. Scott's the guy who tried to talk my into new hobbies such as knitting...

After the safety preparations we hopped to the beach. We found that the boat ramp on the beach was perfect. It has an even layer of sand on top of it so it's soft and nice on feel while relatively flat. There was no debris to stumble on or to set on fire and it's far away from trees and other hazards. We laid out the fuel station away from the spin area, laid out the safety gear etc And we had my car close/ far enough for the music but to keep it safe.

When all was done it was time to light up. We had much trouble getting he poi lit. Apparently we did not soak it long enough to begin with and it was also a bit windy. We were almost about to give up when we decided to try one more time. Voila'. the poi lit and what a flame! Having seen some other fire performers flames, in comparison, these flames were pretty big. Maybe I should have ordered some smaller wicks to start off with. I had read that there will be a loud sound, I was still quite surprised about how loud the flames are! The sound is like a roar! Quite pleasant once you get used to it tho.

Time to start spinning. I had envisioned that I would only do "simple moves" such as 3 bw, 5 bw, 3bw 180 anad 360,hip and shoulder reels and corkscrew i.e. moves that I think I know really well. Well... I had not counted on the psychological effect of having the fire swing behind my back where I can't see it... so I actually ended up doing mostly 3bw, 5bw, corkscrew and an occasional hipreel just to turn. I tried a 3bw 180, but I stared "over analyzing" the move in my mind instead of just letting it happen, and of course I smacked myself pretty hard on the neck... but this was a good thing because the experience showed me that just because I smack myself it doesn't mean I will go up in flames. Also, I found that the flames created a lot of drag and the whole rig was a lot more heavy when fueled and on fire. It was a different sort of experience.

Once I started getting into things, I really enjoyed the experience. It was definetly a very powerful feeling! The fire and the dancing was wonderful, but so was the feeling of being on the beach, under the stars, with the surf crashing on shore, surrounded by some really good friends who were there to support me and keep me safe. It was like magic, beautiful...

The poi kept burning... and burning... I had expected 3- 5 minutes of burn time, but it kept going. At 10 min it was still going strong and I think it was about then that we extinguished them. I was very happy with this first burn.

The experience affected the others as well. They all picked up glow poi and stared jamming. Now at least Thomas and June are ordering their own glow poi and want to get into it. See I am spreading the joy of poi! And I am eagerly waiting for the weekend and burn #2

I've been bellydancing my heart out for the last year or so, and am looking to spice it up a bit. I saw a woman with what I now know as glowing "poi" rings at a drumming event and thought to myself, "I want that, but for fire." So I searched and searched and finally found this tribe! (Hooray!)

Are there any local NYC/NJ folks who get together and play with fire? I'd love to just come for a night and watch how it's done. Are there any products that are better than others to learn with? I'm just spinning with excitement and don't know where to start.
Mine are fire juggling balls. As a juggler (and one who has burned myself aplenty), I feel that flaming juggling balls sound like a great idea! I mean, come now... the danger level is so much more exciting than juggling torches! I know Dube carries some, which I may decide to get in the next few months. I would make my own, but the burnable woods are very dense and hard to carve. I haven't seen much of this toy, plus there is the added potential for contact juggling (when I am better) with the same equipment - a money saver! *nods* Juggling fire in my hands it is!

I am really interested in a fire toy that not everyone is familiar with... working with something new or at least less done. I am also concocting a new invention with my boyfriend, another fire performer... but I will only unveil it after it is finished. Wouldn't want anyone borrowing the idea! Hopefully you will all find it as brilliant as it seems in my head!

If you are currently or aspiring to be involved with the dance, drum or fire performing arts then don’t miss this incredible opportunity to learn and grow at the largest north east gathering built just for you. The spring WildFire retreat had over 100 artists attend and taught more then 30 classes in a verity of disciplines. This fall we have expanded added more class types and will be offering public transportation access (check out the website for details). We are also opening an indoor area for performing arts equipment vendors to come and show their wares. This is a great opportunity to see, hold, and play with different toys made by different folks. If you are a vendor of performing arts toys and want to participate in this way, please email chad@freedomthrufire.com (no charge to setup, you just have to be open to educating everyone on your stuff).
*The coverings and tails are made of this plasticky stuff (like construction flagging tape), so anytime the long-ass tails hit each other while I was spinning little pieces would come off. It took less than 20 minutes to almost tear one off.
*The cotton cord kept getting twisted, despite a metal swivel near the ball.
*The poi were just too damn light, made out of tennis balls. I had to spin too fast to get them to do what I wanted, and that made it very frustrating while learning the 3-beat weave because the lack of weight made me keep hitting myself from spinning too fast.

So how did I fix this?

*Cheapo Tails: I cut off the shitty plastic tails and made new ones out of very thin cotton fabric, then sewed them onto the back of the cover where the old ones were. Worked like a charm.
*Twisting cord: I greased the swivels with Crisco. The weight of the spinning poi was making them stick and it had nothing to help them "move". Worked like a charm too.
* Weight issue: After confirming that the weave was way easier with my homemade tennis ball poi weighted with 15 pennies each, I decided to see if I couldn't fix the PoiToy ones. So I cut open the covers, cut the slit in the bottom where they inserted the cord wider, stuck a funnel in, and filled those suckers with rice. Sealed'em with glue and duct tape, sewed the covers closed, and tested them.

PERFECTO!!! Yay. Now I can quit fucking around with toys and get down to serious business. And now I know I can make better practice toys than a major company.....

Lesson learned: make your own practice poi or be ready to doctor up the ones you buy. And if you have to do that, don't pay too much for them. I like these ones now, but I could have made them, too.

So, last night I finally figured out how to do the weave last night (Wohoo!!), and combined it with single handed forward swings, two hands forward swings, split swinging, backward swings, butterflies, a bit of tribal style snake arms (for an into) and LOTS of dramatic emphasis. Practiced this over an over and think my '3 minutes of fame' should go over relatively flawlessly.

Hi all,

** I just noticed this tribe, so this is cross posted in 'beginner poi' **

I started spinning poi in January of this year, and had my first burn in June. Ive been spinning fire pretty much once a week all summer long, and while it is by no means 'a performance', I've always felt really great after spinning.

A couple of weekends ago I was at an outdoor party, and I lit up with some other fire spinners. I felt a bit apprehensive, but I just chalked it up to the moment and just kept lighting up short burns so that I could get comfortable with it.

Since then I've felt as though the only move I can safely do lit is a 3-beat weave, or perhaps the butterfly (unlit Im as bouncy as usual, and have even been learning new moves). I've tried tossing in a fountain, or corkscrew, low reels -- all stuff Ive done lit before, but I feel as though I cant successfully do them so stop almost before I start -- I'm erring on the side of caution here.

And flow? There is no flow. I pretty much stop one move, swing the poi a bit, then do another move. And even then, I find that when first lit, I just stand there spinning circles trying to get a better feel for the fire.

So, I am chalking this up to a loss of confidence. While I know that the only way to move through this is to spin more fire (and I will this weekend at a festival), Im wondering if this is normal.

Has anyone else out there all of a sudden felt this way?

http://yetithreads.co.uk/coming-soon-specials.htm
The price isn't on the page but when I emailed it's £15.00 + £3.40 shipping ( cost me 35.00 roughly with out looking at my paypal) If anyone elseis curious and has been looking at them as well.
Anyone else noticed all the good poi come's from UK , Aus and NZ? All I've found in the states has been comets and tailed poi mainly ( and the beamers.. ouch to hard for me yet) Or am I missing some sites somewhere?

You know I wonder.. I've been thinging about trying fire staff as well.. maybe I could get them to make me a furry staff? lol

I was terrified that I was going to catch on fire and not know what to do... and within the first 20 seconds, my pants were alight (damn, no one told me velour is the most flammable material known to fire spinning man). So I went WUMP in the snow and couldn't stop chanting "I WANT TO DO IT AGAIN!"
It was wicked! And since I had already caught on fire, I wasn't so nervous about it when I tried again!
